A slipped disc refers to pain usually in the lower back and is actually a misguided term. Disc do not slip, but actually, bulge or herniate between the vertebrae. What is actually happening is a part of the center nucleus of the disc pushes through a tear in the outer layer of the disc. This causes pain either by irritating substances being released or the disk hits a nerve.
What causes this bulge or herniation can be due to various factors that would decrease the strength and resilience of the discs. Lifestyle choices such as smoking, lack of exercise, and poor nutrition can be one of these varying factors. Incorrect lifting, poor posture, injury or trauma, and even daily wear and tear can even further stress the discs causing more discomfort and pain. With these weakened discs a herniation can happen from something as simple as a single everyday motion to a cough or sneeze.
A herniated disc, however, does not always cause any pain and therefore the sufferer may not know they have one. Weak extension of the big toe and issues applying pressure to the heel and toes when walking can be signs of a herniated discs. More severe symptoms can cause changes in bladder or bowel functions or even sexual function. Most of the time though a patient will experience pain that expands into the hips and buttocks and even numbness down the leg.
Chiropractic Treatment of a Herniated Disc
Chiropractic care, stretching, and physical therapy exercises will treat mild to moderate cases. For more severe cases chiropractic care combined with spinal decompression like traction or mechanical decompression will need to be performed for proper treatment. In the extreme surgery may need to be performed on the spine to correct the herniated disc.
